A keratin smoothing treatment coats each strand in protein, seals the cuticle, and turns a forty-minute blow-dry into ten. Nona has been doing them for clients with everything from soft waves to tight curls, and the humidity of a Minnesota July is exactly what they are for.
Keratin treatments do not permanently straighten hair. They smooth it. Curl relaxes, frizz drops away, and hair dries faster and shinier. How straight you end up depends on your texture and how the treatment is applied, and that is a conversation Nona has with you before she starts. If you love your curl and just want it calmer, tell her. Nona uses Keratin Complex and Brazilian Blowout and will recommend one based on your texture and how much smoothing you want.
Results typically last three to four months and fade gradually rather than growing out in a line, so there is no awkward stage. The treatment also works well on color-treated hair and can be done the same week as color if you plan it right.
For hair that is damaged rather than frizzy, Nona may suggest a deep conditioning or bond-repair treatment instead, or first. Clients who came in with over-processed hair describe it as going from damaged to bouncy again. She will tell you which one you actually need. Deep conditioning and Olaplex are $40 each.
What to expect
Plan on about three hours depending on length and density.
Nona shampoos, applies the treatment, blow-dries, and flat-irons to seal it. You leave with it styled.
Follow the aftercare she gives you for the specific product used. Some formulas want 72 hours before washing or tying hair back; newer ones do not.
Use a sulfate-free, sodium-chloride-free shampoo afterward. It is the single biggest factor in how long the treatment lasts.
Book a trim the same visit if you are due. Sealed ends hold better.

Will it make my hair completely straight?
Only if you want it to and your texture allows it. Most clients ask for smoother and easier, and keep some movement.
Is it safe for color-treated hair?
Yes, and it often makes color look glossier. Nona will sequence color and keratin so neither is compromised.
How long does it last?
Three to four months for most people, longer with the right shampoo and less frequent washing.
Can I swim or work out?
After the initial aftercare window, yes. Chlorine and salt water shorten the life of any treatment, so rinse and condition after.
